Why firms refuse to hire underbidders

چکیده

A prominent theory of wage rigidity claims that a social norm against underbidding may prevent wages from falling to market clearing levels. This social norm may therefore cause downwardly rigid wages and involuntary unemployment. Recently performed questionnaire studies have thrown doubt on the conjecture that there is a social norm against underbidding. In this paper we experimentally show that the impact of underbidding may crucually depend on the nature of the labour contract. If labour contracts are incomplete wages may not approach the market clearing level even in the presence of severe underbidding. __________________________________________________________________________________________ We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Swiss National Science Foundation (No. 12-43590.95). Why firms want to organize efficiently and what keeps them from doing so: Evidence from the for-hire trucking industry

In this paper, we integrate the equilibrium predictions of transaction cost economics and the intertemporal predictions of structural inertia theory to derive content-based predictions of the direction, rate, and amount of organizational adaptation. Specifically, we predict that poorly aligned firms (according to transaction cost principles) realize lower survival rates and lower profits than t...

Why capital suppliers (usually) hire workers: what we know and what we need to know

A fundamental question for economics is why large firms in market economies usually assign control rights to capital suppliers rather than labor suppliers. A diverse collection of answers can be found in the literature. But unfortunately little theoretical consensus has emerged, and few attempts have been made to resolve this issue through systematic empirical investigation. This paper reviews ...

Uniform Working Hours and Structural Unemployment

In this paper, we construct a simple model based on heterogeneity in workers’ productivity and homogeneity in their working schedules. This simple model can generate unemployment, even if wages adjust instantaneously, firms are perfectly competitive, and firms can perfectly observe workers’ productivity and effort. In our model, it is optimal for low-skilled workers to be unemployed because, on...

Firms' contribution to open source software and the dominant user's skill

Free, libre or open source software (FLOSS) is nowadays produced not only by individual benevolent developers but, in a growing proportion, by firms that hire programmers for their own objectives of development in open source or for contributing to open source projects in the context of dedicated communities. A recent literature has focused on the question of the business models explaining how ...

Why Does Unemployment Differ Persistently Across Metro Areas?

Unemployment rates differ widely across U.S. metropolitan areas. In 2007, they ranged from 3.1 percent or less among the 25 lowest unemployment metropolitan areas to 6.6 percent or more among the 25 highest unemployment metropolitan areas. Such large differences in metro unemployment rates have held continuously since at least 1990. Moreover, those metro areas that had a relatively high unemplo...
